7 Common Types of Outdoor Advertising in Malaysia

Outdoor advertising, also refers as out-of-home advertising (OOH), is a form of marketing that targets to reach audience outside of their homes. When outdoor advertising is mentioned, what comes to our mind first is billboard advertising.

That is not all.

The outdoor advertising scene has been advancing and has gone beyond creativity throughout the years. From traditional static billboards to creative in-mall advertising you unconsciously see every day, here are the 7 types of outdoor advertising that you can find in Malaysia. 

1. Static Billboard

The classics. Static billboards are usually spotted at highways or highly congested streets. It is one of the earliest types of outdoor advertising that has prevailed over the years. What makes static billboards popular until today is the constant 24/7 exposure that they offer which is impossible for people to not notice. With Long exposure and high visibility, static billboards are effective at building brand awareness and reputation.

An example of a static billboard in Malaysia is the billboard of McDonald’s Malaysia. Aiming to attract local’s interest, McDonald’s has created unique advertising campaigns accustomed to the landmarks of different states in Malaysia.

2. Digital Billboard

Digital billboards are electronic displays that make displaying videos and animations on billboards possible. Eye-catching and innovative, digital billboards give advertisers more flexibility to showcase their ideas in the digital format. The most common types of digital billboards are the LED screens, LED lightboxes and LED buntings. They can be placed anywhere, inside or outside a mall, and even on the streets.

Some of the digital billboards are also remotely controlled by computers which allow advertisers to customize a schedule and switch the display to target the masses at specific times. 

3. Wall-Banner

Wall-banners are advertisments attached on the walls of buildings. They are highly visible from the street as they are placed strategically high, facing a wide coverage of audience. Malaysians will be familliar with these wall-banners which are mostly spotted at the walls of malls in town.

4. Transit Advertising

Transit advertising is the advertisements placed on public transportation or in public transportation areas. Subways, buses, taxies, and trucks are the mediums of transit advertising. Advertisers would wrap advertisements onto these mediums to appeal to the public. This type of advertising offers high visibility for a brand as it can reach a wide range of audience in the public transportation area on a daily basis.

Overhead bridge advertising is the advertisement attached on a bridge passageway above a road, especially along highways. What we usually see is a big billboard on a bridge but it could also be a big banner. Bridge advertising is effective as it is gigantic enough to catch attention when vehicles drive by. 

6. Bunting

Bunting is one of the most common types of outdoor advertising in Malaysia. You will see the advertisements, either in static, lighboxes or LED mediums, attached on buntings and lamp posts all along the street. Bunting advertising attracts eyeballs on the road, targeting audience in their vehicles. 

7. In-door Advertising

In-door advertising is a popular option in Malaysia. This is a type of advertising that you will find in malls, airports, office building or anywhere sheltered in Malaysia. The giant banners, hanging buntings, standing kiosks, car park bunting and even the sticker wrap on the walls or lift doors you see in malls are all forms of in-door advertising. In-door advertising is outstanding because it builds a closer relationship with the audience.

Outdoor advertising is a growing trend in Malaysia. There are many more different forms of outdoor advertising that Malaysians has yet to witness but can anticipate in the coming years.
